Why MVL carrier screening only screen three conditions
Fragile X is the most common inherited intellectual disability. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases, affecting approximately 1 out of 3,300 people. Carrier rate in European Caucasians and Ashkenazi Jews is 1 in 29. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is the second most common fatal autosomal recessive disorder after cystic fibrosis, with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 10,000 live births and a carrier frequency of 1/40 to 1/60. Carrier screening of Fragile X and SMA requires specific non-sequencing-based methods from Asuragen.
